1GOAL: Who are we?

1GOAL works with football to raise awareness for the 69 million children out of school. It is run by the Global Campaign for Education centrally and through its national coalitions in over 100 countries. We have mobilised over 18 million people to support our cause, with over 1 million people signing up every week during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Universal education enables people to help themselves. When people cannot read or write, when they do not have the skills and abilities that a quality education offers, they are condemned to a life of poverty, ill-health and social deprivation – blighting their lives and those of future generations.

• • A child whose mother cannot read or write is 50% more likely to die before the age of five and is twice as likely to suffer from malnutrition than a child born to a mother who completed primary school.
• • A girl in Africa who receives an education is three times less likely to contract HIV/AIDS.
• • If every boy and girl received primary education, 7 million cases of HIV/AIDS could be prevented in a decade.

Children who do go to school and learn live longer, healthier and more prosperous lives than those who are excluded. Ultimately, education leads to greater political and economic stability – creating a brighter future for generations ahead of them.

1GOAL and the Global Campaign for Education will continue to increase public awareness of the vital importance of getting children into school and learning, maintaining pressure at global political events to ensure education for all becomes a reality.
